Wedding ceremony
The honeymoon hotel is situated directly on Muri Beach but the wedding ceremony
takes place on the small offshore island of Koromiri and is based on Polynesian
mythology. The bridal couple is brought to to Koromiri with outrigger-canoes
steered by traditional dressed warriors. Local musicians and dancers await them
on arrival and escort the bride to the Are Tapok, a hut where she is prepared
for the ceremony with a massage and costumed as the Princess of Rarotonga. At
the same time, her future husband is "tattooed" with a pen and dressed as a
prince. Afterwards, bride and groom are brought to each other and the priest
leads them to the Holy Place where they are wed. The rites, at which the escorts
and the hosts sing love-songs, are in the native language. An translator gives
a commentary in English. The traditional ceremony incorporates the valid civil
marriage.
