    Maravu Plantation Resort

The Maravu Plantation Resort is to be found on the garden island of Taveuni, the third largest of the 320 Fijian isles. The island's unique flora, secluded lakes and waterfalls, black and white-sanded beaches, tall mountains and the welcoming warmth of its people, all enchant its visitors. The one-of-a-kind beauty of the underwater world that surrounds Taveuni has meant that the island has long enjoyed a top ten reputation among divers. Flying with Air New Zealand, the 26-hour trip via Los Angeles and Honolulu is truly worth, spring is wrapping Taveuni in a sea of blossoms. The Maravu Plantation Resort is a perfect encapsulation of Taveuni's wonders. Just 100 metres long, its white sandy beach is lined by rainforest trees and swaying palms. The complex was once a copra plantation. Over the years it has been transformed into a flourishing tropical garden. With accommodation for no more than 20 guests, the resort is the ideal retreat for honeymooners looking for peace and tranquillity.

Rooms/Accommodation: Tucked away in the expansive tropical garden are the "Bures" (Bure means house in the native language). They have been built in such a way that, every evening, they each offer a wonderful view of the sunset. They have been designed using woods and textiles, bamboo walls, rattan furniture, coconut matting and pottery. The five De Luxe Bures, the three Honeymoon Bures and the Double Bures include fans, comfortable baths, WCs and minibars as standard. For those lodging in the Honeymoon Bures - as with all the other Bures, there is no risk of being overseen from outside - guests can enjoy both a private sundeck and the luxury of an outdoor shower. The Honeymoon Bures have been fully renovated and now also boast a jacuzzi. Last year, four Honeymoon Suites were added to the resort. Each has its very own private spa and jacuzzi, which can be heated to up to 35 degrees Celsius in a matter of minutes. In July 2004, the new Ocean View Spa Villas were also opened. The villas have indoor and outdoor showers, jacuzzis, gardens separated by a natural stone wall that can be opened in the direction of the ocean, king-size beds with canopies, air-conditioning, CD players and minibars.

The main building is located above the pool and houses the reception, the restaurant, the lounge and a small library containing books on the island and its people. The reception, boutique and bar have been renovated and enlarged. Open on all sides, the restaurant offers diners a choice of outstanding Indian, Creole of Fijian dishes. In the evenings, the Maravu Boy Band entertains guests with traditional music. Watches can be left at home as guests are summoned to meals by "lali" drums.

Activities: A swimming pool, tennis court, children's playground, kayaks and horse riding are all available to guests. Together with their resort team, Jochen and Angela Kiess, the German proprietors, lay on jungle treks and tours in land cruisers so that guests get to enjoy all of the island's sightseeing attractions. After exploring the island, guests can go snorkelling or diving on Rainbow Reef and the famed Great White Wall, which ranks among the world's most beautiful underwater paradises.
